Last weekend I was searching for a brunch spot we hadn’t frequented yet when I stumbled upon a recent article published in the San Diego Union-Tribune titled San Diego’s top 25 brunch spots. #3 on the list was Brooklyn Girl Eatery in Mission Hills, which happened to be a spot that has been on my must-try list for sometime. I made a reservation through Open Table and headed that way.
I walked in and was immediately smitten with the decor. It was light and bright with really creative artwork and eclectic knick knacks as well as a wall of Barbie dolls encased along a wall leading to the ladies room.
I started brunch off like I typically do with coffee first, a wonderfully strong and rich cappuccino with extra foam to be exact. and a grapefruit mimosa. I have been obsessed with grapefruit drinks lately, especially in my mimosas, so I was so pleased to see Brooklyn Girl offers grapefruit mimosas.
I did my typical Yelp review studying on the way to Brooklyn Girl and knew the Chicken n’ Biscuits had my name written all over it. Two things I love together, fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits! The dish is served with two poached eggs smothered in sausage gravy and “love” as displayed on the menu and definitely conveyed in each bite. The biscuits were so good and flaky that my husband ended up ordering himself a side of biscuits. The fried chicken had a perfect crust that remained crispy even covered in gravy. The sausage gravy was fantastic and had a spicy little kick to it that I really enjoyed. I am so glad I ordered this dish and would have a hard time not ordering it upon returning for brunch.
My husband can’t resist pizza especially when there is a wood-fired oven involved. He ordered the Margherita Classico pizza with pepperoni added. I tried a slice of pie and it was fantastic! Really flavorful tomato sauce, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, plus a wonderful smokey flavor from the wood-fired oven.
While looking over the brunch menu when we first sat down, we noticed under the Wood-Fired section on Brooklyn Girl’s menu they had French Toast. That peaked both of our interest so we ordered the dish as a dessert. How could we resist wood-fired French Toast?! It is made with brioche bread, served with Bourbon syrup and cinnamon Chantilly whipped cream (disclaimer: the French toast comes with bananas, but we ordered ours without).
It was crispy on the outside with a nice chewy texture and super-soft-melt-in-your-mouth center. I would order this again and again! Totally worth only eating half of our entrees to save room for dessert!
