A new cafe opened up last month located in Historic La Mesa Village, Sheldon’s Service Station. Being the coffee lover (snob) that I am, I was eager to check them out. SSS has a Coffee and Tea bar, pastries, a full breakfast and lunch menu, and later in the day they serve of beer. On the weekends, they offer a mimosa bar and live music.
Sheldon’s Service Station serves up Cafe Moto, which is a local favorite of mine. You can get a regular cup of coffee, latte, mocha, cold brew, etc. And for non-coffee drinkers, tea, hot chocolate and juice.
I loved everything about the cafe at first sight. They have outdoor seating with plenty of shade, really nice staff and lots of delicious looking dishes coming out of the kitchen. On my first visit I was running solo and had somewhere to get to so I only grabbed a latte to go, but knew I had to come back with my family and try more than coffee.
On my second visit with my family, it was a hot day so I was in need of an iced drink. I liked my latte from SSS so much that I opted to try an iced version. And since it was Saturday, I got to hit up the mimosa bar. SSS has quite a selection of mimosas to choose from, orange juice, blood orange, pomegranate, peach, or mango bellini. I love blood orange, so that was my mimosa pick. And what a hefty pour SSS passes out. Both went well with a warmed up croissant.
From the kitchen, Sheldon’s Service Station has chilaquiles, latkes, avocado toast with burrata, rice bowls, yogurt parfaits and more for breakfast. At lunch time you can grab a panini, sandwich, salad, or soup. They also have a kids menu with a peanut butter panini, French toast croissant, or for lunch a creative hot dog wrapped in puff pastry. The kids menu states “and for those that feel like a kid”, which gave me the green light on the French Toast croissant.
The French toast croissant is served with fresh pear slices and an organic apple cinnamon syrup. The outside of the croissant was buttery and crispy and the inside was thick with gooey layers of dough. The pear slices were thinly sliced and helped add to the best combo of texture! The syrup was a good balance of sweetness without an overwhelming cinnamon flavor. I will definitely order this again!
If you find yourself in La Mesa, you can’t go wrong stopping in a Sheldon’s Service Station! They also serve lunch and dinner with live entertainment on the weekends.
