It just so happened the weekend in October that we went to LA was miserably hot. I’m talking 100 degrees, but that is SoCal in Fall. Our “Sweater Weather” does not typically hit until Winter. The sweltering heat only made us more anxious to eat all of the ice cream we could in our 36 hour getaway.
When I learned there was a Salt & Straw scoop shop in Larchmont Village, which is right in the middle of LA, I was as giddy as a kid on Christmas morning (yes, I am that dramatic especially about ice cream). Don’t think I had not considered taking a vacation in Portland, Oregon mainly for Salt & Straw, Blue Star Donuts and Voodoo Donuts, it is nice to know some of these spots are moving West.
Larchmont Village is nestled in a residential area with a quaint and lovely tree-lined street. It had a small town feel to it, that you would not have realized you were in the middle of LA. On Sunday, there was a Farmers Market, which I would have loved to walk through, but we were on our way home.
On Saturday, I walked in and was greeted by a lot of friendly employees behind the counter willing to pass out samples while I fretted over what to order. I was intrigued by their October Spooktacular Menu, Candy Corn, The Great Candycopia, A Potion of Malicious Delight, and Essence of Ghost. I can honestly say I have never tasted a ghost (ha!), but if they really taste like ice cream, sign me up. Salt & Straw is known for their roasted strawberry ice cream so I knew I wanted to try Roasted Strawberry & Toasted White Chocolate. I also picked Chocolate Gooey Brownie, which sold me when I realized it had giant brownie chunks and marshmallow fluff in it.
OMG!!! I swear Salt & Straw is the best ice cream I have ever had EVER! It is so creamy and dreamy! The Roasted Strawberry & Toasted White Chocolate ice cream was such a perfect blend of flavors. It was something about the roasting and the toasting! As we drove away towards our next stop I kept saying I needed to go back. I kid you not, I dreamt about my Salt & Straw experience that night in our hotel that as soon as my eyes popped open my husband said “let me guess, we are going back to Salt & Straw today.” Smart man, he knows me well! On Sunday we headed back to Larchmont. This time I wanted to try a Spooktacular flavor. I am not really a candy corn kind of girl, but as soon as I sampled the ice cream I was a convert and of course I had to get another scoop of Roasted Strawberry & Toasted White Chocolate ice cream.
My heavens! I’ll say it again, the BEST! I am pretty sure I shed a tear as we walked back to the car with our ice cream cones in hand. Definitely worth any future two hour drives for more Salt & Straw ice cream.
P.S. – Blue Star Donuts recently opened a spot in LA, another reason to return to LA and postpone my Portland vacation dreams. After all, Brioche donuts!
